Civil Service Minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum has revealed two teachers have been terminated for allegedly sexually assaulting students.
This was revealed in parliament where the Minister says the Opposition always puts civil servants on a pedestal, however, it should not be the case.
“Just this week, while sitting here, just yesterday and last week also I had to agree to the termination of a teacher who got primary school kids who he was teaching. Got them to pull their pants down and play with their testicles. I had to agree to the termination of another person who fondled some high school girl. They come here portraying all civil servants as if they coated in milk and honey. Madam Speaker, the reality is these things do happen.”
Sayed-Khaiyum has also confirmed to FBC News, a few others have been terminated for practicing corporal punishment on students.
He also highlighted there were incidences such as teachers banging student’s heads against desks, walls and even rubbish bins.
He has confirmed investigation for these cases is currently underway.
The Minister revealed these issues in response to Opposition MP Aseri Radrodro suggesting to award contracts to civil servants irrespective of their performance.
“We’re not running a charity. If you work in the private sector, you don’t perform, you don’t get your contract renewed. Why shouldn’t it be different from the civil service? Who are you concerned about? The 894,000 Fijians who the civil servants are supposed to serve? Or are we worried about the people who aren’t performing?"
Meanwhile, Sayed-Khaiyum has praised high performing civil servants and those that put in an extra mile as they will be rewarded through bonuses.
