Halfway through the budget debate and the business end of going through
each line of spending outlined for the new financial year is well underway.
Members of Parliament are now voting on the various allocations of the national budget effectively confirming the appropriation effective from the first of August.
With the whole of Parliament session ending at almost midnight, the last two days, the discussions have been lively with both sides weighing in on the Family focused budget.
Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama clear on how things are going for his side of the house.
“It’s going very well and I know the budget will be passed.”
Meanwhile Opposition MP Mere Samisoni notes that while their side of the house doesn’t have the numbers, it’s important they air their grievances.
“It’s very hard to be in a situation where the majority is so much and the minority is so little that no matter what we come up with, they will vote against it, vote against it, vote against it even though we know it’s good.”
The 2018/2019 national budget is estimated at four point six billion dollars, an increase of 300 million dollars from the previous year.
Revenue for the new financial year is estimated at around four point two billion dollars.
