Employment Minister Jone Usamate today clarified the Family Care Leave entitlement of five days announced in the new budget.
Usamate says the fully-paid leave can be taken consecutively or spaced out throughout the year depending on the family’s needs.
“The worker is entitled to paid family care of not less than five working, it can’t be accumulated for a worker to be entitled to family care leave, the worker must as soon as reasonably practicable notify the employer of his or her absence or intended absence and the reasons for it. That’s what it says.”
Usamate also highlighted some of the circumstances under which the leave can be applied for.
“If your son is sick, you have to take him to the hospital or maybe he might have some function at school like parents day or something like that so instead of dipping into your other leave, you will be able to utilize so that’s obviously good for workers and their family members.”
Parliament is currently debating a bill to amend the Employment Relations Act to include the new leave entitlements which could come into effect in the new financial year.
