Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has reiterated Government’s stance on the privatization of schools and their exemption from financial assistance.
In a tour in the North last week, the Prime Minister clarified the issue after concerns were raised by some parents from Vatuvonu Secondary School in Cakaudrove who had learned that the school run by the Seventh Day Adventist Church is to be privatized.
The PM says while he has no say in the Churches decision to privatize, once they do, they will be ineligible for government grants.
“If that is to happen, they’ll have to separate themselves from government and government grant and government assistance, they’ll have to pay for their own teachers but we really don’t want to do that across the board, I mean to get religious schools to look after their own teachers because that would create havoc with the education department.”
There are 731 primary schools and 178 secondary schools, a majority of them run by Churches and religious organizations.
