The use of the Vanua Geospatial Information System will help Pacific Island countries disseminate correct and timely information during times of natural disasters.
Permanent Secretary for Lands and Mineral Resources, Malakai Finau says countries in the region are frequently affected by disasters like earthquakes, tsunami and cyclones, hence, this system will improve communication.
“Earthquakes and tsunami, there were presentations that there are big earthquakes near Fiji especially in Tonga and it can cause damage to infrastructure, so the need for us to detect and disseminate the information quickly.”
Finau says one of the helpful features of the system is that during a disaster the application can be used to locate affected areas.
He says this will also further assist in providing basic necessities like food, clothing and water to those affected.
