The youth unemployment rate stands at 18 per cent with more than 40 per cent of Fiji’s population below the age of 27.
According to the Employment Minister Jone Usamate, this means that their programmes and their focus must be youth focused and forward-looking.
Usamate says this gives Fiji’s youth the opportunity to turn a dream into reality and start a business without stressing about the financial startup.
“Other initiatives that will reduce unemployment in Fiji is the Micro Small Medium Enterprises Grants, social welfare recipients that are earmarked to be assisted to move from welfare to workfare and the standardizing of roadside stalls to support roadside vendors along with our major highways.”
Usamate says the Ministry’s programs are aligned to the several other programs targeting the young Fijians that are run under other Ministry’s like the Youth Entrepreneurship Scheme commonly known as YES run by the Ministry of Trade.
He adds this is also in addition to a program run by the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Forestry.
