MSAF to monitor salvage work

The Maritime Safety Authority will closely monitor the removal of sunken vessel, the MV Southern Phoenix at the Suva Harbor once the salvage operation commences.

MSAF Chief Executive Captain Philip Hill says the salvaging works will be funded through the insurance cover, the ship-owner.

Captain Hill says the estimated time for clearing the ship is within the next three months.

“We have got approvals from the relevant government departments-Dept of environment and Fiji ports because it’s in the boundary .We’ve got approvals for the operation to go ahead.”

PNG owned Pacific Towing Company has been awarded the salvage contract to remove the rig of the Southern Phoenix which has remained in the Suva Harbour for the last 16 months.
