Over the years visiting consultants and specialists have been coming to Fiji to fill in the gaps for services which Fiji cannot provide.
Health Minister Rosy Akbar says matter of concern is how much of that knowledge and skill has been retained in the country.
Akbar says Fijians need to work with the skills that enter the country through the visiting surgeons and specialists learning from them to better outcomes.
“The way forward is to build our country’s skill sets and I think that’s one of the changes we are looking at. We are in a discussion to see how best people can be trained or how best they can be exposed to training internationally so that they can come back and serve the people.”
Akbar also highlights it’s very important to understand the passion visiting surgeons and specialists have for Fiji as they come in the country on their own expense.
