19 wrecks in the Suva Harbor will be assessed by the PNG-based Pacific Towing Company after its salvage operation of the MV Southern Phoenix- the container ship that rolled over in Suva Harbor last year.
Fiji Ports Authority Chief Executive Vaijira Piasena says the assessments will be done once their initial salvage contract is completed.
Piasena adds they will seek financial support as there is no specific budget for the removal of the wreck.
“After the assessment they will let us the cost involved so once we know the cost then we will be able to do the feasibility of the removal of all that.”
A number of owners have abandoned their derelict ships in Suva Harbor leaving the Ports Authority with the expensive job of having to sort their removal.
