The Maritime Safety Authority will work in conjunction with Fiji Ports Authority to ensure there are no repeats of the incident that led to the sinking of the Southern Phoenix 16 months ago in the Suva Harbour.

It’s taken almost two years to finalize the salvage of the sunken ship by contracted PNG owned Pacific Towing Company.

MSAF Chief Executive, Captain Philip Hill says the need for ship owners to adhere to precautionary measures to avoid such accidents is vital.

“We are trying to address this with relevant authority which is Fiji Ports who is in charge of the stevedoring process and receiving of cargo even the weighing of containers or cargo so Fiji Ports have tighten up on those issues.”

Meanwhile Fiji Ports Authority Chief Executive Vaijira Piasena has confirmed the contracted company will also assess nineteen other wrecks in the Harbor, despite having no budget for the removal of derelict ships.
