The Ministry of Poverty Alleviation has revealed that more people are ignoring their responsibilities to care for the elderly and are leaving them in senior citizen homes.
Permanent Secretary, Dr Josefa Koroivueta says too often they have found that Fijians are leaving their parents or grandparents at old age homes or on the streets.
Dr Koroivueta says such behavior of this nature is a moral cry for help.
“We need to bring back! That is the real Fiji – where we look after our elders. After all they belong with us – they are the ones who built us up to the way we are now.”
The Ministry has revealed that demography shows by 2050, there will be more elderly population in the country, hence, it’s important to instill an age friendly culture now.
