The Northland Farmers’ Cooperative marked a milestone earlier this week when they opened their first retail shop in Korovou Town in Tailevu.
The Cooperative will enable their members and farmers in the area to buy their necessary agricultural supplies from within the province saving money and time.
Minister for Trade, Faiyaz Koya says the initiative will not only prove to be an economic boost for the township, but also highlights the growth of Cooperative at a national level.
“Over the last 7 decades or so, cooperatives have actually evolved significantly with about 1089 cooperatives registered in Fiji, the emphasis now is on more resource based rather than consumer. For the past five years on average, 20 new resource based cooperatives have actually registered each year.”
The Northland Farmers’ Cooperative is comprised of 68 members from Tailevu.
