It’s a matter of money, if Fiji wants to have medal winning athletes at the Olympics according to Team Fiji’s Chef de Mission Chris Yee.

Yee says Fiji’s performance at the London Games was better than expected with some athletes achieving personal bests.

He says the fact remains, that if Fiji wants better performing athletes, more money has to be spent for these athletes to train at the best facilities.

“We need financial assistance to have our athletes train at the top level against the top and have access to top facilities. Copeland is in the Diamond League in Europe and Robert Elder, we need to be sending him to Korea to train with the top archers.”

Yee says Fiji’s athletes shook some of the professional athletes during competition, with one getting recognition from the International Olympic Committee.

“Look at Maria Liku’s finish. She was placed eighth and she even received a certificate from IOC recognising her top 10 finish.”

Team Fiji returned last week and again without any medals from this Olympic Games.
