The Fiji Airways Drua side has climbed to the top of the National Rugby Championship point’s table after defeating defending champions Perth Spirit 41-5 at Suva’s ANZ Stadium yesterday.

The Fijians had a near perfect first half with four unanswered tries and keeping the defending champions scoreless to lead 24-nil at the break.

Halfback Frank Lomani, fullback Apisalome Waqatabu, number eight Peni Raidre and captain John Stewart scored for the home side in the first spell.

Stewart added a second while Filimoni Seru scored a try for the Fijian Drua in the second spell.

Isi Naisarani grabbed the visitor’s only points with a try in the 70th minute.

Fijian captain, Stewart thanked his team for a gallant effort.

“We were advised by the coaching panel to play simple rugby and that is what we did. Our set pieces, the scrums, the line-outs, the set plays, we did the basics well. I really thank the forward pack for a marvelous game. I am very happy, really proud of the team’s effort today.”

The Drua lead the standings with 15 points, five ahead of second placed Perth Spirit.

Perth Spirit captain, Michael Ruru congratulated the home side for the win.

“Well, Fiji has been great. Three straight wins and they have surely stamped their mark. They have brought a different flavor to this competition and its upon other teams now to step up to their level.”

Meanwhile, in another match played in the NRC, New South Wales Country Eagles beat Canberra Vikings 25-24.
