In a bid to minimize crime, the Fiji National Sports Commission has joined hand-in-hand with the Fiji Police Force in reaching out to communities to help youths involved in community sports.

Fiji Police Force Director Community Policing Waqa Cavulati says this is to allow youths to stay away from committing crimes and to identify new talent.

“Now we’re doing it getting them away from crimes and identify their talents which I believe it’s also the objective of the Fiji Sports Commission and now we’re able to improve our services out there.”

Cavuilati says they have involved youths in playing rugby and volleyball and there are plans to involve more sports.

Meanwhile, Fiji Sports Commission Chief Executive Peter Mazey says they are now working closely with communities in urban areas since there is an increasing number of youths migrating from rural to urban areas.

“It means we can tackle not just the problems but the growth of our youths and create pathways and identify new elite athletes.”

The signing of an agreement was made today at the Fiji Sports Commission.
