For the first time in almost 20 years, Fiji have beaten Pacific’s number one New Caledonia 2-1 in day two of the team’s event in Tennis during the 2017 Pacific Mini Games in Vanuatu yesterday.
The Fiji men’s won the first set 6-1 but New Caledonia managed to come back in the second set winning 6-2 but Fiji came back in the last set winning 6-4.
Coach Robert Krause says while the win is historic for the team, they are keeping their heads low and taking each game at a time.
“Someone told me that it was the first time in like 20 years that we beat New Caledonia but for us it is not so much of a big deal, we look at it as another match because it is only pool play. What I am really trying to focus on the guys now is to keep it easy, normal like we practiced back home, we just need to play that’s it.”
Looking at the events today, the men’s 69kg weightlifting will start at 1pm followed by the men’s 77kg and the women’s 69kg & 75kg.
The men’s and women’s (team) tennis competition starts at 11am while judo will start at 12pm.
The Fiji football men’s team will then meet Solomon in their second pool match at 6pm tonight.
You can watch the Mini Games live on FBC TV.
