The Solomon Islands National Rugby federation will be hosting the first Sol’ tuna 7s tournament for the first time in Fiji.

The Solomon Rugby aims to recruit players who are of Solomon descendants that live in Fiji and also use this competition for development and exposure of the players.

CEO Gerald Oiaka says recruiting players in Fiji will only be possible once the bill of dual citizenship is being passed by the Solomon government, this is due to Solomon descendants who have lived in Fiji for the past years.

“Well actually it all depends on the dual citizenship currently the may not be eligible to play for Solomon Islands because of the bill citizenship bill it needs to be tabled in parliament but it all depends on the Solomon Island federation we are here actually to have connections because in terms of exposure and more tougher competitions it’s very important for the national team to come out of the country and participate in higher level competition so actually that is the purpose and the aim of bringing the national team.”

He adds they can only confirm for players to represent Solomon once the dual citizenship has been passed.

The Sol’ tuna competition will be held this Saturday at the USP grounds.

Meanwhile, the Solomon national rugby team are preparing for the upcoming Marist 7s tournament next month.
