The Fiji 7s team settled for the silver medal after losing out 14 – nil to New Zealand in the Men’s rugby sevens final at the Commonwealth Games yesterday.
Despite winning the silver medal, the Fijian 7s coach Gareth Baber says he is proud of his players and their achievements.
“I don’t think we were at our best when we played in the final after a tough semi-final against South Africa and a few hours to recover, but I’m proud and happy of the players because this same team participated in the Hong Kong 7s.”
The silver medal achievement is the third for Fiji 7s rugby team since 1998 and 2002.
New Zealand won a historic gold medal at the Games as their women’s side also took gold after beating Australia in a pulsating final in extra time.
Meanwhile, Australia won the Commonwealth Games overall tally with 80 gold, England in second place with 45 gold and India in third place with 26 gold medals.
Fiji sits on 23rd position with one gold from weightlifting, one silver from rugby and two bronze medals from weightlifting and boxing.
