Cikamatana reveals on her sacrifices

April 17, 2018 4:10 am

Team Fiji’s lone Commonwealth Games gold medallist, Eileen Cikamatana, believes her sacrifices have finally paid off.

The 18-year old weightlifter won the gold in the women’s 90kg category in Gold Coast, Australia last week.

She says staying away from the family and training has been her biggest challenge.

“It’s not easy, getting to go away from your family, it’s hard since I’m the second youngest and I’m closer to my parents the others.”

Her mother, Maria Cikamatana says it was difficult to stay away from her daughter when she joined the weightlifting institute in New Caledonia.

“The first year was very hard because every time we spoke over the phone it was a crying session. It took a while because I told her if you are homesick I think you should come back and then she said no mummy I want to stay.”

Cikamatana is in Levuka for a short break and will be returning to the institute at the end of this month.
