Fiji hockey men’s coach, Hector Smith says some serious thought needs to go into the future of the sport if the country is to match the big guns at international level.
The men’s side showed tremendous improvement in their last two games against Bangladesh and Oman by pulling back some superb goals.
Smith says upon their return this week, he will be putting up some suggestions to the Fiji Hockey Federation to consider for developing its players further.
“The level of commitment for all the teams is not the same, some for only one week then come down to play. But, if we can have a separate thing where we have high intensity games with full on pace at home because I know how hard it is to travel, perhaps be more paticular that we get more decent teams to the Pacific Cup. Higher level teams like the NZ Babaians etc because to play internationalm there has to be a serious relook at how to better prepare national teams before they depart.”
The Fiji men and women finished sixth in the World Hockey Series League in India.
They are expected to return on Friday.
